About

You’ve reached the personal background page of Matt Culbert.

I’m now a retired worker, but very active and busy politically, engaged in propaganda work for socialism.

On leaving school at 15. I worked in the service sector (wholesale, shops, sales, all non or under-unionised) for a seven or eight year period, but from then on I worked mainly in the area of initially heavy and then light, engineering. I began to be consciously involved then in the class struggle albeit within a limited understanding of what it constituted and what could be achieved.

This was broken up a lot as a consequence of trade union activity and in between engineering work I also did manual labour, taking in whatever work I could get.

Although involved with trade union activity I resisted joining up with any political party while still trying to find out more about them all within my still limited understanding and capabilities, not helped by deliberate obfuscation by the political parties of capitalism at worse, or well meaning ignorance at best from their adherents. I checked parties, of Left , Right and Centrist persuasions, but I voted for the Labour Party around the time of Harold Wilson, in the hope that reforms for working people would be forthcoming, which could, or so as I naively thought at the time, make a difference to our circumstances.

I’ll write up more later.
